DAY 1 Arrive Accra, stay overnight at an oceanside hotel .
DAY 2 Morning swim . After breakfast we drive to former colonial capital city, Cape Coast. We tour the historic castle where slaves were held in dungeons before descending ‘the road of no return.’ This is a world heritage site. After fresh squeezed drinks in a juice bar we go for short walk about this historic town. . Lunch overlooking the ocean. 30 minute afternoon drive to Hans Cottage Botel, famous for its unique crocodile pond, where you can eat and drink with the famously tame reptiles underneath the restaurant!
DAY 3 MORNING. Early 15 minute drive to Kakum national park where we shall walk over the rainforest on the rope bridge. High above the tree canopy a panorama of bird and mammalian life unfolds beneath us, including monkeys at play. Afterwards,the forest can also be explored from ground level. Drive to Brenu Achninyim beach for swim and lunch. AFTERNOON . Short drive to Elmina for glimpse of the 15th century castle. 2 hour drive to Hideout Lodge, Butre beach . Alfresco evening meal under the stars. Overnight stay.
DAY 4 MORNING Butre beach is perfect for sea bathing or walks along the lovely palm fringed coastal footpath. The whole area is secluded, linked to Takoradi city and the national highway network by earth roads running through miles of emerald forest. Only 600 metres from the hotel lies a traditional village where the way of life is more or less unchanged for hundreds of years. Across a river 200 metres to the east Castle Batenstein, a 17th century Dutch ruin form stands atop a green hill. You may wish to visit the castle OR take an afternoon drive to Princestown, where another fort, Gross Friedrichsburg was built by the Brandenburg Prussians in the late 17th century can be toured The fort overlooks another magnificent beach where swimming is recommended. We take drinks and/ or a meal at a guest house owned by a descendant of one of the fort’s original occupants!
Alternatively, you may wish to embark on a canoe trip up river to view birds and monkeys. On the beach turtles nest and there is a local organisation which protects them. Another Option is to walk over the cliff through a small forest- or be driven - to Busua Beach resort with its cafes and surf school. Optional evening meal at Fanta’s Folly, renowned for its Franco- Nigerian cuisine.. Overnight at Hideout Lodge.
DAY 5 Either relax on Butre’s magnificent beach, or join an excursion to Green Turtle eco resort and /or Cape Three Points via Dixcove with its fishing harbour and fort. Overnight at Hideout.
DAY 6 4 hour Picturesque drive to Kumasi. Lunch at Tarkwa, a gold mining town.
Arrive at Sir Max hotel. Swim and evening meal . Overnight stay at Sir Max 4 star hotel. With swim pool.
DAY 7 MORNING visit Kumasi Market, National cultural Centre. Prempeh 2nd museum and the fort with its military museum and extraordinary history. In Kumasi we witness an introduction to the customs ofAshanti kingship and other aspects of the culture of this ancient land whose inhabitants fought the British in three nineteenth century wars . Visit the biggest market in west Africa and explore the town. Stay Sir Max Hotel.
DAY 8 MORNING: 5 hour drive to Mole - pronounced MOLAY! - National Park. Lunch en route. Evening swim at Mole Motel pool with its stunning views over the savannah. Supper. Stay overnight .
DAY 9 : early [5am] walking safari to view elephant, buck, birds at waterhole. This is one of very few foot safaris in Africa , accompanied by an experienced park ranger to view elephants bathing and possibly dust bathing in the wild. During the day observe exotic birds of many species,baboons, wart hog and other wildlife near the motel. Stay overnight.
DAY 10 Drive [via Bole ] observing the edge of its eponymous national park, and Techiman ,to lake Bosumtwi Paradise lodge, Ashantiland. Lunch en route, possible visit to Monkey sanctuary. Overnight stay amidst heavenly scenery at this lodge overlooking the lake surrounded by green hills.
DAY 11 MORNING : canoe trip or walk around lake. AFTERNOON drive through a green hill country via Kkawkaw and Koforidua . We Drive on to Atimpoku to stay at Aylo’s Bay resort on the green banks of the 400 metre wide Volta River. At dawn and dusk the river reflects the surrounding hills in exquisite symmetry while flights of ghostly white birds skim the water, winging their way in V formation up and down the river. Aylo’s Bay is set in a colourful riverside botanical garden. There are various opportunities to eat at the lodge or elsewhere in the vicinity.
DAY 12 MORNING visit Akosombo market. Here is one of the most picturesquely diverse markets in Ghana, famous for its locally manufactured cloths and tropical fruit. At the Akosombo hotel we lunch with a fabulous view of lake and enormous dam. Lunch. In the afternoon you can relax at Aylo’s bay, take canoe trip,go for walks or swim at Afrikiko resort hotel pool. Overnight at Aylo’s bay.
DAY 13 MORNING . 60 mins drive to Tafi Atome Monkey sanctuary. Opportunity to interact with the animals who enjoy sacred status here.
AFTERNOON: 60 min drive to mountain paradise Lodge in the high Avatime Hills. . 2000 feet above sea level the temperature here is cool at night and the emerald forested mountain scenery magnificent. Opportunity for scenic walks before speciality home cooked food and locally grown coffee for a gourmet dinner at the hotel.
DAY 14 MORNING: short drive to Amedzope - highest settlement in Ghana. Easy ascent of Mount Gemi with its stupendous westerly views over Lake Volta and in the east, over the rolling Togo highlands. AFTERNOON: possibility of attending traditional pre-christian ‘ YEVE’ ceremony, related to the ancient local vodou religion. Opportunity for hiking. And birdwatching. Stay Mountain Paradise lodge.
DAY 15 MORNING: Drive to Keta, with its enormous lagoon, incredible birdlife, magnificent beach and superb swimming .
DAY 16 MORNING Drive to Accra. Explore the town and its markets , monuments and cultural centre.
AFTERNOON assemble at a selected hotel to spend afternoon at pool, have supper. Transfer to airport.
